The story behind the name

Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach is newer than it looks. In January 1987 a nor’easter broke through the barrier beach just east of Chatham Light, letting the Atlantic pour into Chatham Harbor. Some newly exposed shoreline lost more than 65 feet in a year.

In the years that followed, the tip of South Beach curled inward, and by 1994 it had joined the mainland below the lighthouse. That new sand became Lighthouse Beach, with a view straight out to the ocean and, most days, a crowd of seals.

It is a beach for walking and looking rather than swimming: the currents here are strong, and seals mean sharks. Cape Cod Life has the story of the breaks.
